Explore Thailand: Your Complete Travel Guide
Use this guide to choose where to go, how long to stay, and how to move between the city, the north, and the coasts. It is a planning overview, not a personally tested route, and it does not list live prices or room availability.
Planning notes
Thailand at a glance
The two coasts do not share a rainy season. A first trip that tries to see Bangkok, the north, and both seas usually spends the extra days in airports.
Trip length
One coast, plus the city if you have a week
Five days is Bangkok, or one beach area. A week can add either Chiang Mai or one coast, not both in a relaxed way. Ten to fourteen days is when the north and a single coast can share the trip.
Seasons
Ask which coast, not which country
Much of the country, including Bangkok, is most comfortable from about November into February, and wetter from about May into October. The Andaman coast, including Phuket and Krabi, is typically rougher in that May-to-October window. The Gulf, including Koh Samui, is often wetter around October into December. Years vary. These are patterns, not a forecast.
Budget
The flight south is its own line
Lodging swings between a city neighborhood and a beach. Domestic flights are the cost that appears when you add a second region. This page has not checked live hotel rates, and it does not publish a daily budget.
Why go
Why visit Thailand?
A capital, a cooler north, and two different seas sit inside one country, and they do not belong in the same three days.
Bangkok is temples, neighborhoods, and food that is easier to eat than to schedule. Chiang Mai is the northern base, with highland viewpoints a drive away rather than a walk from the old city. The Andaman coast is limestone and long-tail boats. The Gulf islands, including Koh Samui, are a different shoreline and a different wet season.
Ayutthaya is the ruin day people attach to Bangkok. It is a real day if you leave in the morning. It is not a substitute for a night in the north. This page shows the places we have photographs for, and it names the others without pretending a picture of one coast is the other.

Where to go
Best places to visit in Thailand
Phuket and Krabi share the Andaman coast in the photograph below. Koh Samui is a Gulf island with a different rainy season, and Ayutthaya is a ruin day from Bangkok. Neither has its own photo on this page yet. City guides will be linked when those pages exist.

Bangkok
Neighborhoods, river boats, and food stalls. The city is large enough that the area you sleep in decides the evenings.

Bangkok's temple precincts
The grand palace and the major temples are a dressed, timed morning. They are one district, not the whole city.
Guide in progress

Chiang Mai and the highlands
The old city is the base. Viewpoints such as the twin chedis at Doi Inthanon are a day in the hills, not a stop on the way from the airport.

The Andaman coast
Phuket and Krabi are the usual names for this limestone coast. Boats between beaches take longer than the map suggests, especially when the sea is up.

Itineraries
Plan your Thailand itinerary
Use the length to decide whether you keep the north, one coast, or both. These are route shapes, not day-by-day schedules, and none of them is a personally tested trip. No Thailand itinerary page is published yet.

Stay in Bangkok, or fly straight to one beach and skip the city. Doing both in five days is a transfer.

The city, the north, and one coast can share ten days if each flight is treated as a travel day.

14 days in Thailand
Two weeks can hold Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and a slower coast, still on one shoreline rather than both seas.

Experiences
Best things to do in Thailand
Temples, food, and boat days need different amounts of time. Open a collection where one already exists.

Temples
Cover shoulders and knees, and take your shoes off where you see the step. Some halls restrict photography. Follow the posted rules.

Food
Street stalls and neighborhood shops are the practical way to eat. This page does not name restaurants, rank dishes, or list prices.

Coast and boats
Long-tail days on the Andaman coast depend on the sea. A rough afternoon is a reason to stay on land, not a schedule to force.

Northern highlands
Doi Inthanon and the ridge viewpoints are a day from Chiang Mai. They are cooler than the city and a poor add-on to an arrival evening.

Day trips
Ayutthaya from Bangkok is the classic ruin day if you leave in the morning. A beach is not a day trip from the capital.

Accommodation
Where to stay in Thailand
Choose the area before the building. A riverside Bangkok night, an old-city Chiang Mai base, and a beach are not interchangeable.
In Bangkok, the useful comparison is the river, the older center, and the areas near the transit lines you will actually use. In Chiang Mai, staying inside the old city changes the evening. On the Andaman coast, the pier you leave from in the morning matters more than a ranked list of resorts.
No Thailand neighborhood guide is published yet. These notes do not list hotel prices, review scores, or rooms you can book.

Transport
Getting around Thailand
Domestic flights cover the long jumps. Trains and buses cover some of the rest. There is no single pass that replaces that choice.
Bangkok to Chiang Mai is a flight of about an hour, or an overnight train that takes most of a night. Exact times change with the timetable, so confirm them before you book the nights on either end.
Bangkok to the Andaman coast is usually a flight to Phuket or Krabi. The road and the ferry add time once you are trying to reach a specific beach. Gulf islands such as Koh Samui are a different routing. Do not assume one airport serves both coasts.
Inside Bangkok, the BTS, MRT, and river boats cover more of the city than taxis do at rush hour. Tuk-tuks are a short local ride, not the way across town. On the islands and in the old city of Chiang Mai, walking and local songthaews do more of the work.

Thailand travel tips and essentials
Connection, payment, temple etiquette, packing, and insurance sit beside the itinerary.

Internet and eSIMs
A data plan makes ride apps and maps usable. Whether an eSIM works depends on the phone. This page does not confirm compatibility for any device or carrier.
Read eSIM guides

Payment methods
Cards are common in hotels and malls. Markets, small restaurants, and local boats still often want cash. This page does not quote ATM fees.

Cultural etiquette
Dress modestly in temples and remove your shoes. Do not climb on ruins or point your feet at a Buddha image. A wai is a greeting, not something you need to perform for every transaction.

Packing
Light clothes, a temple layer that covers shoulders and knees, and a rain layer in the wet months. The northern highlands are cooler than Bangkok. Reef and sun protection matter on the coast.

Travel insurance
Before you buy, ask what medical care, delays, and trip changes the policy covers, including boat days if the coast is the plan. This page does not compare policies or describe coverage.

Questions
Practical questions before you go
Short answers for trip length, cost, season, getting around, and staying online.
How many days do you need in Thailand?
Plan on five days for Bangkok or for one beach. Seven days can add either Chiang Mai or one coast. Ten to fourteen days is when the city, the north, and a single coast can share the trip. These are planning ranges, not a tested itinerary.
How much does a trip to Thailand cost?
There is no honest single daily figure on this page. Rooms swing between the city and the beach, and a domestic flight appears as soon as you add a second region. We have not checked current hotel rates or exchange rates.
When is the best time to visit Thailand?
November through February is the most comfortable stretch for much of the country, including Bangkok. The Andaman coast, including Phuket and Krabi, is typically wetter and rougher from about May through October. The Gulf, including Koh Samui, is often wetter from about October into December. Treat those as typical patterns. Check a forecast for the coast you booked.
What is the best way to get around Thailand?
Fly between Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and the coasts when the road would take most of a day. An overnight train is a common Bangkok–Chiang Mai alternative and takes most of a night. Confirm the current timetable. Inside Bangkok, use the BTS, MRT, and river boats. This page does not quote fares.
How do you stay online in Thailand?
Most travelers use a travel eSIM or a local SIM so maps and ride apps work. An eSIM only helps if the phone supports it, and this site does not verify handsets or networks. Read the eSIM guide for the questions to ask.
