Explore Spain: Your Complete Travel Guide
Use this guide to choose two bases instead of collecting every famous city. It is a planning overview, not a personally tested route, and it does not list live prices or room availability.
Planning notes
Spain at a glance
The fast trains are real. The mistake is treating Madrid, Barcelona, and Andalusia as one neighborhood.
Trip length
Two bases, not the whole map
Four or five days can be Madrid or Barcelona, not both done well. A week can hold two cities if the train sits in the middle of the trip. Ten days is when Seville or Granada joins them. Fourteen days is the length where a coast or another Andalusian city stops being a rush.
Seasons
Andalusia in summer is a different walk
Spring and autumn are the easier months in Seville and Granada, where midday heat in summer empties the streets. Madrid and Barcelona are busier in summer and more comfortable in the shoulder months. This page does not publish a rainfall table.
Budget
Trains and timed tickets first
High-speed trains and timed entries, including the Sagrada Família and the Alhambra, are the costs to price before hotels. This page has not checked live fares or ticket stock, and it does not publish a daily budget.
Why go
Why visit Spain?
A capital, a coastal city, and an older south that does not fit in the same afternoon.
Madrid is a walking city with a metro for the longer hops. Plaza Mayor is one square in a much larger center, useful as a landmark and a poor summary of the whole capital. Barcelona is the other first-trip city: the Eixample grid, the older streets below it, and buildings that need a booked entry rather than a glance from the pavement.
Seville's Plaza de España sits in María Luisa Park, a short walk from the old center and not a substitute for the cathedral and the Alcázar. Granada is another city. The Court of the Myrtles is one court inside the Alhambra, and the Alhambra itself is a half-day with a timed ticket. This page shows the places we have photographs of, and it does not use a picture of one city for another.

Where to go
Best places to visit in Spain
The Basque coast, Mallorca, and the Canary Islands are separate trips. They are not pictured here. City guides will be linked when those pages exist.

Barcelona
Park Güell and the Sagrada Família both use timed entries. Give the city more than a night if the neighborhoods are the point, not only the monuments.

Madrid
Plaza Mayor is the arcaded square in the old center. The museum miles and Retiro are a different day. Three nights is the usual minimum if you want a morning that is not an arrival.
Guide in progress

Seville
Plaza de España is the brick semicircle in the park. The cathedral and the Alcázar are the old center, and summer afternoons are for shade, not a long outdoor list.
Guide in progress

Granada
The Alhambra is the reason to come, and the Court of the Myrtles is one part of it. Book the entry before you treat Granada as a spontaneous day from Seville.

Experiences
Best things to do in Spain
A monument with a ticket and a neighborhood walk need different amounts of time.

Timed monuments
The Sagrada Família and the Alhambra are booked visits. Arrive for the slot you hold. This page does not list prices or say whether tickets are still available.

Neighborhood walks
Barcelona's older streets, Madrid's center, and Seville's old quarter are the un-ticketed part of the trip. They fill an afternoon more honestly than a list of five landmarks.
Browse cultural ideas

Gardens and parks
Park Güell is a hill and a ticket. Plaza de España is a park in Seville, easier to fold into a walking day than a monument with a time slot.
Browse outdoor ideas

Day trips
Toledo from Madrid is the classic full day. Granada from Seville can be done, and it is a poor plan if the Alhambra ticket is the point of the visit.

Accommodation
Where to stay in Spain
Choose the neighborhood before the building. A night next to a plaza and a night on a metro line are different mornings.
In Madrid, the old center is walkable and louder at night. A metro stop a few stops out can be the more practical sleep. In Barcelona, the Eixample grid is easier with luggage than the lanes below the cathedral. In Seville, the old quarter is the evening, and summer heat makes a pool or a quiet street more useful than a view of a square.

Transport
Getting around Spain
The high-speed train is the spine. Stations are not always in the oldest streets.
High-speed trains between Madrid and Barcelona, and between Madrid and Seville, commonly take under three hours. Some services are slower. The timetable changes, so book the departure you mean rather than a rough average. Stations sit a metro or taxi ride from the squares in the photographs.
Barcelona and Seville are not a short hop. A route that includes both usually passes through Madrid or spends a long day on the train. Do not chain them onto the same evening.
Inside each city, the metro and walking cover a short stay. Reserve taxis or the metro for arrivals with luggage. Granada's Alhambra is uphill from the lower town. Plan that climb, or the bus, as part of the ticket time.

Internet and eSIMs
A data plan makes station changes and timed-entry emails easier to reach. Whether an eSIM works depends on the phone. This page does not confirm compatibility for any device or carrier.

Late evenings
Dinner is later than in northern Europe. A museum morning and a long lunch fit the climate better than a schedule copied from another country. This page does not name restaurants or list prices.

On the ground
In churches and in the Alhambra, dress as you would in other major European monuments and follow the bag rules at the entrance. Do not block a narrow lane for a photograph when people are trying to pass.

Packing
Comfortable walking shoes, a sun layer in Andalusia even outside peak summer, and a warmer layer for Madrid evenings outside July and August. A large suitcase is a liability on hills in Granada and on Barcelona's older streets.

Questions
Practical questions before you go
Short answers for trip length, cost, season, trains, and staying online.
How many days do you need in Spain?
Plan on four or five days for one city, Madrid or Barcelona. Seven days can hold two cities with a high-speed train between them. Ten days is when Seville or Granada fits. Fourteen days is the length where a third stop stops being a rush. These are planning ranges, not a tested itinerary.
How much does a trip to Spain cost?
There is no honest single daily figure on this page. High-speed trains and timed tickets, especially the Alhambra and the Sagrada Família, are the costs to price first. We have not checked current fares, ticket stock, or hotel rates.
When is the best time to visit Spain?
Spring and autumn are the easier months, especially in Seville and Granada. Summer is hotter and busier, and Andalusian afternoons are a reason to plan indoor time. Winter is cooler in Madrid than on the southern coast. This page does not give a month-by-month forecast.
What is the best way to get around Spain?
Take the high-speed train between Madrid and Barcelona, or Madrid and Seville. Those services commonly take under three hours, and slower trains take longer. Confirm the timetable when you book. Use the metro with luggage, and walk once you are in the center. This page does not quote fares.
How do you stay online in Spain?
Most travelers use a travel eSIM or a local SIM so maps and ticket emails work in stations. An eSIM only helps if the phone supports it, and this site does not verify handsets or networks. Read the eSIM guide for the questions to ask.
