Explore Indonesia: Your Complete Travel Guide
Use this guide to choose where to go, how long to stay, and how to move between islands. It is a planning overview, not a personally tested route, and it does not list live prices or room availability.
Planning notes
Indonesia at a glance
These are planning ranges and seasonal patterns. They are not a quote for your dates, and one island's weather is not the whole country.
Trip length
One island, or a flight between two
Five days is a Bali trip, not an Indonesia trip. A week can hold Bali plus one short add-on if the transfer is a flight you have already priced. Ten to fourteen days is when Java, or a farther island such as Raja Ampat, stops being a connection with no time left over.
Seasons
Bali's dry months are not a national calendar
On Bali, the drier months are typically April through October, and the wetter months November through March, with the heaviest rain often in January and February. Java's volcano highlands and Raja Ampat do not follow that same pattern. Check the coast you are actually visiting.
Budget
Flights between islands move the total
Lodging, inter-island flights, and food move independently. A resort coast and a guesthouse in a rice-terrace village are different trips. This page has not checked live hotel rates, and it does not publish a daily budget.
Why go
Why visit Indonesia?
The country is an archipelago. A good first trip picks one or two regions and treats the flight between them as part of the plan.
Bali is the usual start: a coast, a lake temple, and the rice terraces inland can share a week if you are not also trying to reach Java. Java adds Borobudur and the Bromo highlands, which are a different landscape and a different transfer. Farther east, Raja Ampat is a separate trip built around boats, not a side day from Bali.
Food is everyday rather than a reserved circuit: warungs, markets, and coffee. Ceremony and dress codes at temples are part of visiting, not a backdrop. Choose the island for the days you have, then add a second only when the flight still leaves you nights on the ground.

Where to go
Best places to visit in Indonesia
These six are the regions a first itinerary usually weighs. Lombok, Komodo, and Yogyakarta are real trips too. They are not pictured here, and this page does not link to city guides that are not published yet.

Bali's coast
Sea temples and beach towns are the usual first base. Distances look short on a map and take longer in traffic.

Ubud and the rice terraces
Inland Bali is villages, terraces, and a slower evening. It works better as a few nights than as a half-day stop from the coast.
Guide in progress

Bali's lake temples
Ulun Danu Beratan sits on a lake in the central highlands. It is a morning outing from a nearby base, not a reason to cross the island twice in one day.
Guide in progress

Borobudur
The Buddhist temple on Java is a sunrise visit for many people, which means a night nearby rather than a day trip from Bali.
Guide in progress

Mount Bromo
The volcanic caldera in East Java is its own overnight. Viewpoints fill before dawn, and the walk depends on the conditions that morning.

Raja Ampat
Limestone islands in West Papua are a boat trip, usually reached by air via Sorong. It does not combine neatly with a short Bali week.

Itineraries
Plan your Indonesia itinerary
Use the length to decide how many islands you can keep. These are route shapes, not day-by-day schedules, and none of them is presented as a personally tested trip.

5 days in Indonesia
Stay on Bali. Split the nights between the coast and the rice-terrace villages, and leave Java for another trip.
Draft outline. Not a personally tested route.

7 days in Indonesia
A week still suits one island, with a slower pace. Adding a flight to Java only works if you accept a short stay on one side.
Outline only. A full seven-day page is not published yet.

10 days in Indonesia
Ten days can hold Bali and a Java piece, such as Borobudur or Bromo, if the flight is booked as a travel day.
Outline only. A full ten-day page is not published yet.

14 days in Indonesia
Two weeks is the first length where a farther region, including Raja Ampat, can sit beside Bali without collapsing into airports.

Experiences
Best things to do in Indonesia
Temples, terraces, and island boats need different amounts of time. Open a collection where one already exists. The others stay on this page until their guides are ready.

Temples and ceremony
Dress codes and ceremony calendars matter. A sarong is often required, and some courtyards are not a backdrop for a quick photo.
Browse cultural ideas

Rice terraces
The inland terraces are walking country. Go early if you want the paths quieter, and stay nearby if they are the point of the day.

Food
Warungs and markets are the practical way to eat. This page does not name restaurants, rank dishes, or list prices.

Volcano landscapes
Bromo is a pre-dawn start. Conditions on the crater change, and a viewpoint day is not a hike you improvise without local guidance.

Island boats
Raja Ampat and similar eastern coasts are boat days. They are a poor fit for a single afternoon tacked onto a city stay.

Day trips
From a Bali base, a useful day trip still leaves time at the place. Crossing to Java for the day is the trip that usually does not.

Accommodation
Where to stay in Indonesia
Choose the area before the building. A coast, a rice-terrace village, and a volcano town are different bases.
On Bali, the useful comparison is the south coast, Ubud and the terraces, and the lake highlands. Traffic, not mileage, decides whether two areas can share one hotel.
Only the Bali area guide is available. Java and Raja Ampat stay notes will be linked here when they are written. None of these pages lists hotel prices, review scores, or rooms you can book.

Where to stay in Bali
Compare the coast with the inland villages. The Bali guide is a draft and does not rank hotels.

Where to stay near Borobudur or Bromo
Both are early-morning visits, so the useful base is the town you can leave in the dark. A Java area guide is not published yet.

Where to stay in Raja Ampat
Stays here are usually tied to a boat or a homestay island. An area guide is not published yet, and this page lists no resorts.

Transport
Getting around Indonesia
Between islands, you fly or take a ferry. There is no national rail pass that stitches the country together.
Bali is scooters, cars, and drivers. The island is smaller than the traffic makes it feel, especially between the south coast and Ubud. A private driver for a full day is a common way to see temples without riding a scooter if you do not want to.
Java has trains between some cities, including the Yogyakarta area, but Borobudur and Bromo still need a car or a local transfer at the end. Times and which trains run change, so confirm the current timetable before you treat a train as the plan.
Raja Ampat is a flight, usually via Sorong, and then a boat. Ferry routes elsewhere in the country are real, and they are also the plans most likely to slip. Build a buffer if a ferry sits between two booked nights.
A dedicated Indonesia transport guide is not published yet.

Essentials
Indonesia travel tips and essentials
Connection, payment, temple etiquette, packing, and insurance sit beside the itinerary.

Internet and eSIMs
A data plan makes maps easier between villages. Whether an eSIM works depends on the phone. This page does not confirm compatibility for any device or carrier.
Read eSIM guides

Payment methods
Cards are common in hotels and larger shops in tourist areas. Smaller warungs, markets, and local transport still often want cash. This page does not quote ATM fees.

Cultural etiquette
Cover shoulders and knees at temples, and use a sarong where one is offered or required. Do not sit higher than offerings or step over them. Ask before photographing people during a ceremony.

Packing
Light clothes, a rain layer in the wet months, and shoes you can walk terraces in. A modest layer for temples is more useful than a formal outfit. Reef-safe habits matter if you are in the water.

Questions
Practical questions before you go
Short answers for trip length, cost, season, moving between islands, and staying online.
How many days do you need in Indonesia?
Plan on five to seven days if the trip is Bali. Ten days can add Java, such as Borobudur or Mount Bromo, if you treat the flight as a travel day. Fourteen days is the point where a farther region, including Raja Ampat, has room. These are planning ranges, not a tested itinerary.
How much does a trip to Indonesia cost?
There is no honest single daily figure on this page. Lodging swings between a coast resort and a simple guesthouse, and inter-island flights can cost more than a day of food. Domestic connections and ferries are the line items to price before you add a second island. We have not checked current hotel rates or exchange rates.
When is the best time to visit Indonesia?
For Bali, April through October is typically drier, and November through March is wetter, with the heaviest rain often in January and February. That pattern does not automatically apply to Java's highlands or to Raja Ampat. The useful month is the one that matches the coast or volcano you are actually visiting.
What is the best way to get around Indonesia?
Fly between distant islands, and do not plan on a national rail pass. On Bali, use a driver or a car if you are not comfortable on a scooter in traffic. Java has trains on some city pairs, then a road transfer for Borobudur and Bromo. Raja Ampat is a flight plus a boat. Confirm ferry and train times close to travel, because they change.
How do you stay online in Indonesia?
Most travelers use a travel eSIM or a local SIM so maps work away from hotel Wi-Fi. An eSIM only helps if the phone supports it, and this site does not verify handsets or networks. Read the eSIM guide for the questions to ask, and treat any future partner link as a paid recommendation rather than a compatibility promise.
Keep planning
Start with Bali, then decide if a second island fits
Open the five-day Bali outline if that is the whole trip. Use the Bali stay notes when you are choosing a coast or an inland base. Java and Raja Ampat guides will be added here as they are written.
