Explore Greece: Your Complete Travel Guide
Use this guide to separate Athens from the islands. It is a planning overview, not a personally tested route, and it does not list live prices, ferry times, or room availability.
Planning notes
Greece at a glance
Athens is a city. An island is another journey, even when the map makes the sea look small.
Trip length
The capital, then one island
Three or four days can be Athens, including the Acropolis, without an island. A week can hold Athens and one island if the flight or ferry is its own part of a day. Ten days is when a second island is possible. Fourteen days is the length where island hops stop feeling like a sequence of ports.
Seasons
Heat, wind, and the summer ferry
Late spring and early autumn are the easier months to walk Athens and the caldera towns. Summer is hotter, more crowded, and the season when ferries run most often. Wind can still cancel a boat. This page does not publish a forecast or a sailing calendar.
Budget
Flights, ferries, and the view
Rooms with a caldera view and last-minute ferries move sharply in summer. The Acropolis is a separate ticket. This page has not checked live fares or hotel rates, and it does not publish a daily budget.
Why go
Why visit Greece?
A major archaeological site in the capital, and island towns that are steeper than the postcards.
The Acropolis is the reason a first trip starts in Athens. The photograph from Philopappos Hill shows the Parthenon on the ridge, and it also shows scaffolding, which is often part of the real view while work is underway. The visit itself is a climb in the sun and a timed entry, not a backdrop for the rest of the day.
Oia, in the Santorini photograph, is one village on one island: white volumes, a windmill, and a cliff. Sunset there is crowded. The paths are steps. Other islands, including Crete, Naxos, and many smaller ones, are not this picture and should not be planned as if they were.

Where to go
Best places to visit in Greece
Crete, Naxos, and the Peloponnese are part of a longer plan. They are not pictured here. City and island guides will be linked when those pages exist.

Athens
The Acropolis is the booked morning. The neighborhoods below it, including Plaka, are the walking afternoon. Give the city at least two nights if the hill is the point.

Oia, Santorini
The windmill and the white cliff are Oia, not the whole island. Fira is the busier arrival town. Steps and sunset crowds are the practical constraints.

Experiences
Best things to do in Greece
The hill in Athens and the cliff paths on Santorini are both walking, and they are not the same day.

The Acropolis
Go early or late, carry water, and treat the ticket time as the plan. The site is exposed. This page does not list prices or say whether a slot is open.

Cliff walks
Oia's lanes are steps. A walk toward Fira along the caldera is a real distance in the sun, not a stroll between cafés. This page does not name beaches or boats.
Browse outdoor ideas

Athens on foot
Plaka and the streets below the Acropolis fill an afternoon after the hill. A neighborhood guide is not published yet.

Island connections
A ferry is a day of travel. A flight is shorter and still an airport transfer on both ends. Do not plan either as a side trip from a museum morning.

Accommodation
Where to stay in Greece
Choose the stairs before the view.
In Athens, a base you can walk from after the Acropolis matters more than a distant resort address. Plaka is atmospheric and hilly. A flatter area near a metro stop can be the easier night with luggage.
On Santorini, a caldera room in Oia or Fira is the photograph and a climb with bags. Many arrivals are happier sleeping where the bus or the taxi can stop. No Greece neighborhood guide is published yet. These notes do not list hotel prices, review scores, or rooms you can book.

Transport
Getting around Greece
Athens has a metro. The islands have flights, ferries, and steep roads.
The metro connects central Athens, including the airport line. The Acropolis itself is a walk up from the nearest streets. Do not plan that climb with a full suitcase.
Santorini is a flight or a ferry from Athens. Flights are the short connection and still include airport time. Ferries take a large part of a day, and the schedule changes with the season and the weather. This page does not quote durations or fares. Confirm the boat or the flight you mean.
On Santorini, buses run between Fira and Oia and get crowded at sunset. Taxis are limited. The lanes in the photograph are for walking. A Greece transport guide is not published yet.
Transport partner links are not connected yet. Nothing here is a checked fare or a booking.

Internet and eSIMs
A data plan helps with ferry changes and bus stops. Whether an eSIM works depends on the phone. This page does not confirm compatibility for any device or carrier.
Read eSIM guides

Heat and timing
The Acropolis and the Oia paths are exposed. Morning and late afternoon are the workable hours in summer. This page does not give a temperature chart.

On the ground
Cover shoulders and knees where a church asks for it. On the Acropolis, stay on the allowed paths. In Oia at sunset, leave room on the lanes so people who live there can pass.

Packing
Shoes with grip for stone and steps, a hat, and a bag you can carry. Wheeled luggage is a poor match for Oia's lanes and for the last walk to many caldera rooms.

Questions
Practical questions before you go
Short answers for trip length, cost, season, ferries, and staying online.
How many days do you need in Greece?
Plan on three or four days for Athens without an island. Seven days can hold Athens and one island if the flight or ferry is its own part of a day. Ten days gives that island a slower pace. Fourteen days is when a second island fits. These are planning ranges, not a tested itinerary.
How much does a trip to Greece cost?
There is no honest single daily figure on this page. Ferries or flights, the Acropolis ticket, and summer rooms on Santorini are the costs to price first. We have not checked current fares, ticket prices, or hotel rates.
When is the best time to visit Greece?
Late spring and early autumn are the easier months for walking and for finding space in the caldera towns. Summer is hotter and busier, and it is when ferries run most often. Wind can still disrupt boats. This page does not give a month-by-month forecast.
What is the best way to get around Greece?
Use the metro in Athens, including the airport line. Reach Santorini by flight or ferry, and treat either as travel time rather than a side trip. On the island, use the bus between Fira and Oia and walk the lanes. Confirm schedules when you book. This page does not quote fares or crossing times.
How do you stay online in Greece?
Most travelers use a travel eSIM or a local SIM so ferry updates and maps work. An eSIM only helps if the phone supports it, and this site does not verify handsets or networks. Read the eSIM guide for the questions to ask.
